Characteristic of self-adhesive film

Pasting furniture with a self-adhesive film has several advantages:

  • a variety of design solutions can be implemented;
  • the film is non-toxic, safe for human health;
  • a waterproof surface will protect your furniture;
  • long term of operation;
  • low price;
  • large assortment of colors and decor.

Before proceeding with gluing, you need to choose the right film.

To do this, you need to understand what types of self-adhesive films are on store shelves. We will consider in detail what major parts they consist of.

The main components:

  • The surface layer - can be paper, polymer, metallized.
  • Glue base - most often it is acrylic and rubber.
  • The protective backing is made of silicone paper.

Production technologies are:

  • Injection - such a film tends to stretch without heat treatment. This property makes it possible to use the material on a rough or corrugated surface.
  • Calendered - when cooling, this film for gluing furniture does not stretch, so it can be used for gluing a straight and smooth surface.

Important! The film made by injection molding almost does not shrink. And in a calendered way over time, it can “shrink”. Consider this feature when calculating the material for updating the design of interior items.

In appearance, the surfaces are distinguished:

  • Matte films - can be used for gluing furniture, which is located in a bright room.
  • Glossy - this coating will look better in dark or not very bright rooms.

Technology for applying film to furniture

Having decided on the choice, we proceed to gluing. It seems to you that sticking itself is not a very time-consuming process? This is not entirely true. As in any business, there are some nuances about which we will tell you in detail.

Instruments

Getting started, prepare the following tools:

  • rags are dry and clean;
  • the scissors should be sharp, to complete the rounded contours, prepare scissors with rounded ends;
  • sharp knife;
  • medium grain sandpaper;
  • primer and putty on wood, in case of visible damage to the furniture surface (can be purchased at any hardware store);
  • roller or rubber spatula or squeegee (special tools can be purchased with the film);
  • acetone or solvent for degreasing the surface.

Surface preparation

The first stage is the preparation of furniture for gluing:

  • To ensure that the surface is glued evenly and efficiently, disassemble your furniture into parts and remove accessories (doors, handles, hinges, mirrors, shelves, rails).
  • Clean the surface of dirt and dust.
  • Degrease kitchen furniture with acetone or thinner.
  • Carefully inspect the furniture if there are parts that do not fit snugly or tighten the joints.
  • Sand areas with protrusions, and remove cavities and chips with a primer and putty for wood.
  • Prime the surface to be glued - for this, it is better to use a water-based acrylic primer.

“Dry” film sticking method

The gluing process can be done in two ways:

  • “Dry” method;
  • “Wet” way.

razravnivanieBased on the name, you, of course, understood that in the first you will not use water, and in the second case it is simply necessary.

Important! The temperature in the room where you will stick the self-adhesive film for furniture should be from +10 C to +20 C.

Working process:

  1. Cut the film into pieces of the desired size. Roll the cut parts into rolls.

Important! Pre-measure the width and length of the parts, add one centimeter to the allowances. Pay attention to the reverse side of the film there is a drawn grid, the cell in it is 1 cm2. Thanks to this, you can easily cut the right-sized canvases.

  1. On one side of the roll, release the film from the liner by 10-15 cm. Then, with the adhesive side, attach to the inside of the part.
  2. Press the edge firmly, and pulling the roll, move to the end of the product, while removing the lining further.
  3. Firmly pressing with a roller or squeegee, straighten the canvas from the center to the sides so that there are no bubbles and creases. If you still get creases or some other errors, then you can peel off and reapply.

Important! Bubbles can be removed with a needle - puncture the bubble, release the air and squeegee tightly with the squeegee where the bubble was.

  1. We paste the inside of the furniture with the same techniques.

Important! If you do not have skills, then it is better to make the first pasting together. One sticks, the other holds and guides the canvas.

Wet Method

Use this method when you are working with large cuts of film for pasting furniture. The process technology is almost the same, but there are several differences:

  1. Lay out the cut sheet in free space, face down.
  2. Remove all paper backing.
  3. Use a household or garden spray to spray soapy water (add a few drops of dishwashing detergent to the water).

Important! Once moistened with a soapy solution, immediately, without letting it dry, you need to glue it.

  1. Apply the wetted side to the glued surface of the furniture.
  2. Using a roller or squeegee, drive out the water with smoothing movements - first draw in the middle from top to bottom, then from the center to the edges.
  3. Do not touch the surface for 10-12 hours.

Important! When your furniture has bulges and bends, you need to stretch the film. You can use a hairdryer to dry your hair. Turn on the hair dryer and heat the film. It will become soft and easily take the desired shape.
