What wallpaper can be painted?

We should not forget that different types of finishing materials differ from each other in a variety of characteristics. Not all varieties of wallpaper are suitable for coloring.

Important! Vinyl coatings on a non-woven basis are just the very exception to the rule. They can be painted with enamel dyes several times, while maintaining the texture and appearance.

There are two varieties of “vinyl”:

  • The first type is based on paper, not intended for coloring. Thin base paper does not withstand staining. Water from the dye impregnates the paper, and the wallpaper can not only be deformed, but simply lag behind the wall.
  • The second type of wall coverings with vinyl is non-woven. Flizelin belongs to the category of moisture resistant materials, so the paint does not harm the glue. Moreover, such a base, due to its characteristics, contributes to a uniform coloring of the surface.

In addition to the base, PVC coated webs can be classified as follows:

  • Moisture resistant trellis for bathrooms and kitchens.
  • Embossed Wallpaper.
  • Material with a surface from the made foam PVC with a pattern and texture.

Are all of these varieties of wallpaper suitable for coloring?

  • Painting vinyl wallpaper on a non-woven basis is possible if the “top” of the canvas is made of foamed PVC. A sufficiently thick decorative layer will not allow the wall covering to deform and lose its attractive appearance.
  • When choosing materials on foamed PVC, you need to decide in advance whether you will paint the wall. In principle, paint can be applied to wallpapers of any color, but a white base is preferable in this regard.
  • We must not forget that the more corrugated the surface, the more difficult the staining process will be.

Important! If you do not have experience in such work, it is advisable to choose materials with simple drawings and small protrusions.

What wallpaper can be painted and which paint?

One of the secrets to success is a competent choice of paint. Not all dyes are suitable for this. It is important that the coloring composition meets the following requirements:

  • Do not use paint with chemically active substances in the composition. Strong chemicals and solvents destroy the surface of the coating, it loses its attractiveness.
  • Do not use a dye with toxic substances inside the living room.

The best option is water-based formulations.

Water emulsion

This is ideal for children's rooms and bedrooms. This coating has a smooth glossy texture, the surface acquires dust-repellent properties. Handprints on such walls also do not remain.

But water-based paint has its drawbacks:

  • She is afraid of water, therefore unsuitable for kitchen or bathroom.
  • At the end of the finishing work, the walls must not be washed.

Acrylic

These compounds have a number of positive qualities:

  • Quick drying.
  • Possibility of application for surfaces using several shades and complex painting technologies.
  • Moisture resistant. Acrylic painted walls can be cleaned of dirt with soap and water.

Latex

High-quality, but quite expensive consumable, with which painting the wallpaper on a non-woven basis will be especially successful. The surface is glossy, latex has a good water-repellent effect and has a long service life.

Important! This dye is great for painting non-woven wallpaper in the bathroom, bathroom, hallway or kitchen.

Most common technology

The following factors influence the right choice of staining technology:

  • Type of wallpaper.
  • The novelty of the coating.
  • The presence of previous layers of dye.

Is it possible to paint vinyl wallpapers on a non-woven basis - we have already found out. Now the question arises - how much time you need to withstand after gluing. Depending on the glue used, this period is from 2 to 4 days.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Stir the paint and pour it into a wide vessel so that it is convenient to use both the roller and the brush.
  2. Paint the main area with a roller; brush with hard-to-reach areas.
  3. If there is no experience, start painting from walls that will be covered with furniture.
  4. Paint the walls in two layers. Apply the second coat after the first has dried completely.

Is it possible to paint vinyl wallpapers not for painting? In principle, you can try. Naturally, before starting work, the surface must be dusted and degreased, and work should be started when the wall is completely dry.

Important! When choosing a color scheme, the color of the base coat must be taken into account:

  • Dark material should not be coated with light paint.
  • Ideally, if the dye is in tone with the color of the base or darker.
  • When updating old wallpapers, an aqueous emulsion composition should not be used. Thicker enamel will do.

Custom Techniques

These interesting technologies are used by experienced craftsmen, but this does not mean that a lay person will not be able to use them.

All these techniques are based on the use of one of the properties of vinyl - the ability to slowly absorb paint. Due to the long absorption process, the pigment is qualitatively fixed in vinyl so that it does not rub off and is not washed off. Here is a description of interesting techniques based on exploiting this characteristic of vinyl.

Partial staining

Apply the paint using a roller, and then, without waiting for the surface to dry, wipe off the dye with a moistened sponge. It turns out that the original color of the wallpaper shines through the layer of applied paint a little. The result is a unique volumetric effect.

Nonwoven staining

The sheets are treated even before the walls are pasted over. The roll is cut into segments of the desired and dye is applied with a roller on the reverse side. Stick wallpaper on the wall after the paint is completely dry.

The use of different colors

The essence of the method is as follows:

  1. First, the wall is painted in one layer in one color.
  2. Then, using the brush and the second color, draw the structure.

Such painting looks simply amazing, but the technique is rather complicated, it requires professional skills.
