We strengthen the legs of the chair

All individual elements of wooden chairs are interconnected with glue. During the operation of the furniture, the adhesive seams become not so strong and dry up, as a result of which the legs of the chair begin to loosen or even fall off.

To repair a chair in this case is not difficult. Before you begin to repair the item, you must prepare the following tools:

  • reliable wood glue;
  • sharp knife or chisel;
  • ordinary sandpaper;
  • a hammer that has a rubber tip;
  • press.

Simple chair repair

If the chair has a simple structure, in which its legs are attached directly to the seat itself, it is quite easy to fix it:

  1. Carefully remove the staggering leg from the socket, the pin is the top of the leg, which is inserted into the groove, clean from the long-dried glue.
  2. If the adhesive layer is thin, then it can be removed with a piece of sandpaper. A much thicker layer can be with a chisel or knife, and after that, sand its surface with an emery cloth of any roughness.
  3. After that, apply a fresh layer of glue to the trunnion surface, and then firmly insert it into the seat seat.
  4. If the foot enters the hole with great difficulty, you can lightly tap the hammer with a rubber tip on it.
  5. If desired, you can press the glued part with a press.
  6. Remove any protruding adhesive residue with a piece of any clean cloth.

Important! You can start using the chair one day after the repair is completed - during this time the glue has time to dry thoroughly.

If the design of the chair is complicated

It is much more difficult to repair a chair if its legs are interconnected by crossbars or by a special frame called a tsar. Just sticking a leg that staggers in this case will not work. You will have to carefully disassemble the bottom of your chair and glue absolutely all the elements of the disassembled structure anew.

If the glue line is thinned only in one of the places, then you can fix the problem with:

  • thin drill and drill;
  • disposable syringe;
  • furniture glue.

How to proceed in order to repair a chair with your own hands in this situation:

  1. Drill a small hole in place of the base of the leg that staggers. This must be done on the inside so that the hole is invisible.
  2. Using a syringe, insert your glue into the hole and let it dry.

Another fix

But how can a chair be repaired if its trunnion staggers in the seat opening itself? For this procedure, you will need the following tools:

  • stripes of bandage or gauze;
  • glue for furniture;
  • sandpaper.

Restoration of the chair is as follows:

  1. Remove the problematic leg from the seat socket, clean its top of the dried layer of glue with sandpaper.
  2. After that, wrap the trunnion several times with gauze or bandage, smearing each layer with glue.Thanks to such actions, the diameter of the pin will increase slightly and it will be able to thoroughly enter the seat seat.
  3. As soon as the glue on the bandage or gauze is completely dry, glue the leg to the chair itself, smearing the restored pin with a layer of glue. Insert into the groove of the seat.

Important! If the staggering legs of the chair cannot be disconnected from the seat for some reason, then you can simply put glue into the gap between the pin and the socket and let it dry. For this, it will be convenient to use a disposable syringe.

Simple upholstery replacement method

From frequent use, the upholstery on the seats of your chairs can begin to wipe and even tear. Most people throw such furniture into the trash or give it to professionals for renewal, putting quite a lot of money for work. At the same time, not everyone is aware that restoration of chairs with an already upholstered upholstery can be done with their own hands at minimal cost.

Materials for work

In fact, all the tools that are necessary in order to drag the upholstery will be found in the house of each owner. To upgrade the chair seat, you will need the following tools:

  • roulette;
  • scissors or a sharp knife;
  • marker;
  • flat or curly screwdrivers;
  • pliers;
  • hammer;
  • staple remover, you can use a sharpened flat-blade screwdriver instead;
  • furniture stapler;
  • nails, screws, staples;
  • wood glue.

Important! In addition to the tools, the home master will need such materials: a new fabric for upholstery and furniture foam.

Working process

Restoration of the chair must be done in stages, clearly following all the tips, and then the already restored old chair will look no worse than the new ones:

  • If the chair has standard sizes, then on its seat you will need a piece of fabric for upholstery 50x50 cm. During the replacement of the seat cover, the fabric will have to be replaced on the back of the chair.
  • From the front and back surfaces of the backrest, measure using a tape measure, remembering to add 2-3 cm on each side for upside down. It is more convenient to make all marks on the fabric on the inside with a marker.
  • The dimensions of the foam rubber must be calculated in the same way as the fabric, while not leaving a three-centimeter margin for upside down.

Important! The standard thickness of the foam rubber for the seat should be 3 cm, but on the back a little less, 2 cm. Cutting the foam rubber is best done not with scissors, but with a sharp knife - in this case its edges will be even.

  • Once the measurements are taken, and the foam and fabric are cut, you can proceed to disassemble the old chair. To begin, unscrew the seat and back. Check the remaining frame for strength - if it staggers, then carefully disassemble it into separate parts, clean from dried glue.
  • After this, cover the frame elements with carpentry glue, reconnect them. The glue will dry throughout the day.
  • While the chair frame dries up, you can start the process of changing the upholstery of its soft parts. To do this, remove all nails and staples from the back and seat, then remove the old upholstery fabric as well as the soft filler. After you have completed all the actions, pieces of plywood or fiberboard will remain in your hands. On them you must stick a new foam rubber.
  • Once the glue has dried, you can proceed to upholstery the back and seat of the chair with a cloth.
  • Attach the upholstery fabric to the surface of the back or seat, secure it from the inside on the front with a furniture stapler or small nails, then pull it tight and nail to the back. Once you have done this, fix the fabric on the sides.
  • Pull upholstery material, which protrudes in the corners, carefully attach to the base and secure with nails or staples.

Important! As soon as you replace the upholstery on the soft elements, you must assemble the chair. During assembly, you can replace old screws with new ones.
