DIY hats

Despite the fact that the hood has become an almost indispensable attribute of modern urban style, hats, hats and scarves are still not out of fashion. A flirty hat will complement an elegant autumn coat, a cap will help you feel confident on a sunny summer day, and a hairpin can be a spectacular decoration for a ball or wedding dress. Even original novice needlewomen can make original headwear made of fabric with their own hands. You will learn how to do this from our article.

What is needed for this?

Making hats with your own hands is a fascinating task, but you will need a few things:

  • sewing machine;
  • set of needles for a sewing machine;
  • set of needles for hand sewing;
  • tailor's scissors;
  • tape measure;
  • chalk or soap;
  • wooden ruler;
  • thick paper (best graph paper);
  • pieces of fabric;
  • threads matching the color and quality;
  • non-woven;
  • cardboard;
  • glue;
  • materials for decoration.

Sewing machine

Any sewing machine will do, even a grandmother’s manual “Singer”. The main thing is that you feel confident and easy to carry out the most simple operations.

Important! The machine should be debugged and equipped - it is better to immediately buy a set of needles of different thicknesses to change them depending on the fabric.

the cloth

Any fabric is suitable for making hats. The most important thing is to choose a model. For example, making a hat with fields of crepe de chine or gas is hardly advisable, but something soft in an oriental style is no problem.

Accordingly - at hand should be threads of different thicknesses and different qualities so that it is possible to sew both natural and synthetic materials (it is better to sew nylon with nylon, silk with silk, etc.)

Let's start with a simple

The easiest option is an Arabic-style scarf. To make oriental hats for women with their own hands, you need soft fabrics that can drape well. Fit for you:

  • fine silk;
  • crepe de chine;
  • fine knitwear;
  • Kisei
  • gas.

Important! If you are making a hat for the first time, it is better to refuse knitwear, unless you already have a knitted scarf with swept edges. To work with this material, you need a special needle.

The oriental-style scarf is a long strip closed in a ring. First you need to make the strip itself. It can be single or double, manufacturing methods will vary.

Option 1

To make a single oriental scarf, you will need a strip 40-50 cm wide and about 1 m 20 cm long:

  1. Work the slices with an overlock or overcast manually with a buttonhole stitch.
  2. Sew short edges to make a ring.

Important! Make sure that the strip does not twist.

Option 2

If the fabric is very thin, you can make a double scarf:

  1. Cut a strip of the same length, but 1 m wide.
  2. Fold the fabric with the front side inward, aligning the long sections.
  3. Sew long sections.
  4. Trim the allowance 1 mm from the seam.
  5. Turn out a strip.
  6. Gently press the seam if the fabric allows it.
  7. Fold the workpiece in half, combining short slices.
  8. Stitch a short seam.
  9. Flatten the seam.
  10. Sew over the allowances.

Important! Such a scarf is put on the head, then a long loop is thrown over the head, which covers the shoulders and chest.

Turban

A popular oriental headdress made of fabric is a turban. They sew it directly on the head, so for work, most likely, you need an assistant. A wide scarf or scarf made of thin fabric is used as a blank.

The manufacture of such a headgear from fabric is performed as follows:

  1. Fold the scarf in half, aligning the long sides.
  2. Attach it to the head so that the middle falls on the forehead.
  3. Guide both ends to the back of the head, twisting them slightly.
  4. Make a single knot on the back of the head (you can fix it with a pair of basting stitches).
  5. Draw the ends to your forehead towards each other.
  6. Tuck the left end under the right so that the edge is not visible.
  7. Staple the layers with a few stitches.
  8. Tuck the right end under the top layer of fabric and also fasten.
  9. Remove the turban.
  10. Where there was a basting, lay more reliable seams.
  11. Decorate the turban.

Important! Suitable for decoration:

  • brooch;
  • feathers;
  • rhinestones;
  • sparkles.

The brooch can be pinned to one of the nodes. If you choose rhinestones or sparkles, it is better for them to trim the places where the seams are laid.

Bandana

Another simple do-it-yourself fabric headdress is a bandana. It can be sewn from a dense fabric, best of all cotton. Fit:

  • chintz;
  • satin;
  • calico;
  • linen.

Pattern

First you need to make a pattern. First you need to take measurements:

  • head circumference;
  • distance from the middle of the forehead to the crown;
  • distance between temples.

The pattern is best done on graph paper, because there is a grid:

  1. Draw a straight line, the length of which is equal to half the circumference of the head.
  2. Mark the edges - for example, Z (nape) and L (forehead).
  3. To both points draw perpendiculars in the same direction, set aside the distance from the middle of the forehead to the crown of the head.
  4. Divide the distance between the temples in half.
  5. Set aside the point from the point L and draw a perpendicular, also, marking the point, for example, with the letter M.
  6. Connect the points L and M in a smooth line.
  7. Extend the line from point Z by the same length, put a point, for example, 31.
  8. Connect the points M and Z1 with a smooth line.

The pattern of the main part of the bandana is ready, you can go to the visor:

  1. On the graph paper, draw a straight line.
  2. Set aside a length equal to half the distance between the temples.
  3. Designate points B (temple) and L (forehead).
  4. To point L draw a perpendicular.
  5. Put 5 cm on the perpendicular and put a point, for example, L1.
  6. Connect the points L1 and B in a straight line.

Cut

Fold the fabric inward and act as follows:

  1. Superimpose the pattern of the main part so that the fold of fabric coincides with the fold line of the pattern.
  2. Circle the pattern with chalk or soap without allowance.
  3. Cut the workpiece.

Visor

It is covered in the same way as the main part, only 0.5 cm should be made for all sections. To make the visor more rigid, it can be strengthened with non-woven fabric or made of a lighter fabric.

Assembly:

  1. Process sections of the main part with an overlock or manually (a loop seam is most suitable, but the loops should be even and lie close to each other).
  2. Strengthen the visor details with adhesive non-woven.
  3. Fold them with their faces.
  4. Sweep and stitch along all sections, except the one that will be attached to the main part.
  5. Cut allowances so that no more than 2 mm is left to the seam.
  6. Cut corners at an angle of 45 °.
  7. Turn out a peak.
  8. Iron the seams.
  9. Iron free allowances inward.
  10. Align the middle of the fold of the visor with the middle of the main part and chop with a tailor's pin.
  11. Stitch the visor.

Hat with brim

For the manufacture of this headdress, a more or less dense fabric is suitable - from chintz to velvet or brocade. In addition to her, you will need:

  • hat ribbon;
  • thin hard cardboard;
  • compass;
  • scissors;
  • universal glue;
  • awl;
  • tape measure.

Important! Cardboard can be replaced with paraplen or penofol.

Take measurements

To make a hat with brim, you need the following measurements:

  • head circumference;
  • field width;
  • height of the body;
  • bottom diameter.

The girth of the head is removed in the usual way - by applying the zero mark of the centimeter tape to the middle of the forehead, we draw it along the most convex parts of the skull - just above the ear, above the nape, above the second ear and again to the middle of the forehead.

All other measurements can be arbitrary. For example, the width of the fields can be 10 cm, the height of the top - from 5 to 15 cm, the diameter of the bottom - 5-10 cm.

Important! The easiest way is to make a hat with vertical fields - the diameter of the bottom will be exactly the same as the diameter of the hole in the fields. At the blank for the fields we make allowances on those sides that will join the bottom and the fields.

Pattern

To make a pattern, you need to know the radius of the hole. For this, the head circumference is divided by 6.28. Farther:

  1. Draw on a cardboard a circle of the corresponding radius.
  2. Add the field width to the radius and draw a second circle from the same point.
  3. Carefully cut the hole - this will be a pattern for the bottom.
  4. Make a pattern of fields - it is a rectangle, the length of which is equal to the circumference of the head, and the width is arbitrary (for example, 10 cm).
  5. The bottom pattern is just a circle.566582

We make blanks

It is necessary to make one part of the bottom and tulle:

  1. Lay the fabric in one layer face down.
  2. Circle the patterns.
  3. Cut out the details.

Fields

Fields are tightened on two sides, so there are two parts that are needed:

  1. Fold the fabric in half with the front side inward.
  2. Circle the cardboard circle, leaving 1 cm of allowance along the outer and inner circles.
  3. Cut parts into allowances.

Assembly

We begin the assembly by stitching the fields:

  1. Fold the parts with their faces facing each other.
  2. Sew the outer edge.
  3. If the fabric is stiff, allowance can be cut at a distance of 1 mm from the seam.
  4. Insert a cardboard pad.
  5. Iron the hole allowances on one side.

Important! We tighten the fields, spreading glue on the fabric allowances and pressing them to the allowances on the cardboard. Make sure the fabric is not creased. Iron the bottom allowance on the wrong side, grease with glue, insert a cardboard piece and press it tightly. We wait until all this dries.

Finish assembly

All work must be carried out very carefully, trying to ensure that the glue does not get on the front side of the fabric:

  1. We glue the overlap over the top - the fabric cut in this place should be perfectly even, you can pre-process it with an overlock.
  2. We bend the upper allowance of the tulle to the wrong side at an angle of 90 °, grease it with glue and attach the bottom.
  3. We bend the lower allowance of the top outward at the same angle and grease with glue.
  4. We put the margin of margin between the cardboard blank and the top layer of fabric.
  5. Press tightly.
  6. We close the junction of the tulle and fields with a hat ribbon.
  7. Decorate the hat.

Important! You can use the same principle to make a miniature hairpin - the technology is the same, but the clip from the old hairpin is still attached to the bottom.

DIY jewelry for hats

Since ancient times, hats have been trying to effectively decorate - with flowers, precious stones, exquisite lining of precious metals. A modern woman can also make her hat elegant and unique.

Traditional elements:

  • bows;
  • flowers
  • feathers;
  • fantasy compositions from different elements.

Bows

A bow can be made from the same hat ribbon with which you closed the seam. It is done very simply - you do not even need to overcast the edges, because the tape has an edge:

  1. Cut a piece of tape 15-20 cm long.
  2. Fold it in half with the front side out, but do not iron anything.
  3. Bend the free edges to the middle.
  4. Iron the bends.
  5. Sew the sections.
  6. Sweep the layers along the already made seam and pull off a little.
  7. Cut another piece, 5-8 cm long.
  8. Close them the estimate.
  9. Bend the free edges to the other side of the bow, where the seam is.
  10. Sew them.
  11. Attach a bow to the hat.

Important! Instead of a bow on the hat ribbon, you can attach other elements - a spectacular buckle or brooch.

Flowers

Perhaps the most favorite female jewelry for a headdress.They can be made from different materials:

  • tissue;
  • skin
  • suede;
  • artificial stones;
  • beads.

Important! To make flowers from fabric, special tools are needed. Buying them is easy, but it takes time to get comfortable with them. But plant elements from the skin can be made without special equipment.

You will need:

  • pieces of skin of different colors;
  • boot knife;
  • scissors;
  • awl;
  • cotton threads;
  • glue for the skin;
  • ball pen;
  • paper for patterns;
  • material for the middle - beads, for example.
  • pan.

Training:

  1. The skin must first be put in order - to clean and tint, if there is such a need.
  2. It is best to paint with special dyes for this material - you will probably find them in the nearest good shoe store.
  3. The simplest flower consists of five separate round petals. They are best cut according to the pattern so that they are the same. Circle the template with a ballpoint pen on the wrong side. Petals are cut with a shoe or any other short sharp knife.

Important! To make the petals convex, they can be “fried”:

  • Place the blanks on the pan with the wrong side down.
  • Slowly heat until the petals begin to bend inward.
  • As soon as you like the shape - get the blanks (it is best to use wooden tongs).

Assembly

Petals need to be put together. This is done as follows:

  1. Identify the junction.
  2. Make one puncture on each petal at a distance of 2-3 mm from the edge.
  3. Sew the workpieces with strong cotton thread.
  4. Close the junction with a bead or a leather circle.
  5. You can insert additional decorations between the petals and the center - colored feathers or fur.
  6. To make the flower look more impressive, it can be supplemented with leaves - from the skin of the same or a different color, suede, feathers, etc.

Important! You can fry in a pan only genuine leather, the leatherette from this melts.

Shawls

A popular headdress is a scarf. You don’t need to sew it on purpose, you can always buy it in the store, and if there is nothing suitable, just cut a square from the fabric and overcast the edges. Scarves can be tied in many ways.

Matryoshka

The most classic version:

  1. Fold the scarf in half.
  2. Put it on your head.
  3. Tie the edges under the chin.

Komsomol member

Shawls or scarves in this way were fashionable to tie in the first half of the last century. The scarf is tied at the back of the head, the corner remains on top or retracts under the knot.

Cossack

To tie the scarf in this way, it should be quite large. Bring the edges back, make a single knot, then draw them onto the forehead and tie them with a double knot to make “ears”.

Important! These are the most popular ways. But you can make a pirate shawl, and a bandana, and a flower. In addition, any woman can think of how to tie this square or triangular piece of fabric in an unusual way, and it is possible that she will become the trendsetter of the new fashion.
