Wax for parquet board

To increase the working life of a wooden floor, special protective compounds are often used - oil and wax for parquet boards. Practice has shown that this is a good alternative to varnish. These environmentally friendly and completely safe compounds that reliably protect wood can be used, in addition to parquet, for ordinary wooden floors. In the oil mixture - safe components that are processed by a special technology.

Parquet oil - features

Parquet lacquer looks beautiful, but the layer is thick and fragile. Oil, unlike varnish, penetrates the pores of wood. A minimal amount of composition remains on the surface. There is no protective film, but the durability and strength of the wood increase.

The opinion that varnish or oil composition increase the moisture resistance of wood is wrong. But the process of moisture loss with oil impregnation is much better than with varnish. The thick lacquer layer does not retain water, which leads to swelling of the boards and damage to the outer coating. The oil does not interfere with the evaporation of moisture.

Important! To improve the properties of the oil composition, wax is added to it. Special application of the wax layer is not necessary in this case, since it already remains on the surface. An alternative to wax is a polyurethane additive that creates a reliable protective layer.

Advantages

The advantages of applying an oil mixture to a varnish coating are as follows:

  • Lower time compared to varnishing.
  • The work is very simple, special skills are not needed.
  • High maintainability of the floor, possible restoration in parts. Lacquered floors cannot be partially repaired.
  • Breathable effect. Paul not only looks attractive, but will last longer than varnished.
  • It is pleasant to walk barefoot over the oiled surface, tactile sensations are much more pleasant than from varnish.
  • The oil layer well emphasizes the natural texture of wood. Parquet under the oil looks just great.

Important! Sometimes, to prevent the exit of oil to the surface, apply a primer in several layers after soaking the boards with an oil composition. However, with significant loads on the parquet, the primer layer may peel off.

Parquet board oil - when is it best to apply?

If you still have not chosen between varnishing and oil impregnation, consider this factor as well. Application of oil to the parquet is preferable in the following cases:

  • The wood from which parquet boards are made is sensitive to high humidity and temperature extremes.
  • The tree incorporates natural oils in significant quantities.
  • If a parquet system is installed under the parquet.
  • Oil impregnation is great for boards mounted on an uncovered terrace.
  • When the floor comes in contact with moisture (e.g. near a home pool).

Important! The application of any protective agent does not preclude compliance with the operating rules of such a floor covering. All of them are described in detail in our article. "Parquet Care".

Classification

All oil-based coatings can be divided according to several criteria.

Chemical composition

Distinguish between natural and artificial impregnation:

  • For natural products, mineral and herbal ingredients are used. Some mixes contain wax for varnished parquet boards.
  • Artificial compounds do not contain wax, but polyurethane. All types of impregnations have a solvent based on gasoline or mineral spirits.

Color

There are color and colorless compositions. Color impregnation for wood, unlike ordinary dye, does not mask the natural texture of wood. Impregnation is stained with special pigments. On sale there are compositions and without pigments, in which dye is added independently.

Important! The more pigment, the richer the coloring. Typically, the concentration of pigments does not exceed 10%.

Surface gloss

More often mixtures are sold without shine (the surface is matte), but there are also tools to create a shiny floor surface. Such parquet looks more elegant, but to look after it is much more difficult. On a glossy floor, scratches and other defects will be more noticeable.

Important! Depending on which type of protection you have chosen, also choose the appropriate ones:

Concentration

Thick and liquid impregnations are available for sale. It is desirable to use a thick composition as a topcoat after using a liquid product:

  • The thick composition contains from 80 to 90% natural oil.
  • Impregnation of medium consistency. The same indicator is 50%.
  • The liquid composition is approximately 70% solvent.

Important! Liquid impregnation is well suited for periodic floor care. Penetrating deep into the pores of wood, liquid oil for oak parquet renews the protective layer.

Application area

This classification feature can also be called “wear resistance”, or “resistance”. There are impregnations on the market specifically designed for floors withstanding high loads, or for surfaces with minimal loads (for example, for a bedroom or bathroom). Mixtures that are resistant to wear have a higher cost.

Depending on the place of use, impregnation for indoor use or outdoor use (for example, for a terrace board) is divided.

Application on the parquet

Before applying the mixture, the floor is ground with a special looping or grinding machine. The surface must be perfectly clean, free of dust and debris. The impregnation is mixed well. For drawing use a long-nap wide brush. The average consumption of parquet oil per square meter of premises is 20 liters. There are 2 application methods.

Cold

The procedure is as follows:

  1. The product is applied to the floor surface in a thick layer, without rubbing.
  2. After about 20 minutes, all the oil that the wood is able to absorb is absorbed into the material.
  3. The remaining oil is removed with a clean, absorbent cotton cloth.
  4. Parquet is treated with a special polishing machine and again wiped with a cloth.
  5. After a few hours, a second layer is applied, having previously treated the previous layer with sandpaper until it is dull.

Important! The consumption of material for the second layer will be less, since the wood has already managed to soak. The application order is no different from the first layer.

Impregnation dries in a few days. The optimum temperature in the room at this time is 20 degrees. If you get a flat surface with a noble satin shine, then you did everything right.

Important! Over time, any wooden coating wears out and needs to be restored. The following our tips will help you easily cope with this task:

Hot

The essence of this method is to use oil preheated in a water bath to 80 degrees. The composition in this case is absorbed much better:

  1. Parquet is heated with a thermal drop. The impregnation is applied to the floor with a spatula.
  2. A second coat can be applied after about 2 hours.
  3. You can polish the floor with wax for a parquet board after 2 days.Polish the floor with wax twice, with a three-hour interval.

Important! After using the impregnation, the floor needs care. The first 2 weeks it is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and a dry cloth. In the following days, soapy water or special products are used for care. The care program also includes surface treatment with liquid impregnation.
